Managing Director at The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra About the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra (CJO) The CJO is an arts nonprofit with a mission to increase awareness and appreciation of jazz by engaging the community with original music, exceptional performances, and inspirational educational programming. CJO presents 4-5 large scale season series concerts each year, featuring guest artists and a range of themes. Recent guests have included Maria Schneider, Regina Carter, Joe Lovano, Vanessa Rubin, Sean Jones, and Terrell Stafford. In 2021, the CJO made its season series home at the incredible Maltz Performing Arts Center, in University Circle. In addition to the concert series, CJO performs at various venues in Northeast Ohio and the surrounding areas all year, in clubs like the Bop Stop and BLU Jazz+ Akron, at summer festivals, in places of worship, in theaters, and more. The CJO is proud to provide the region with innovative educational outreach, most of which takes place in the local school districts during normal school hours. Most of CJO’s performers are also master educators who work regularly with students of all ages. About the Role The Interim Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the administration, performance logistics and details, leading the CBA negotiations, and strategic planning of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing strategies, maintaining donor relationships, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors. It is anticipated that the Interim ED will serve until the permanent ED role has been filled, and for a transition period thereafter, but not to exceed July 30 th , 2026. The Interim ED may choose to apply for the permanent ED role. Strategic Direction Develop work plans and organizational development goals to advance the organization’s strategic direction Ensure that all programs, policies, and practices are in alignment with CJO's mission Organizational Development & Management Ensure ongoing mission-centric programmatic excellence and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems Work collaboratively with CJO's staff, providing clear communications and keeping a shared record of all pertinent CJO information (including vendor contracts, grant reporting and applications, and any other necessary information) Ensure that the organization operates in compliance with the requirements of its collective bargaining agreement Provide professional development opportunities; and a common sense of purpose for the staff (in partnership with the Personnel Committee) Review and refine data systems, ensuring best practices around data privacy and data maintenance Financial Management (in partnership with the Finance Committee) Ensure fiscal health through long-term financial planning and ongoing budget analysis Ensure financial best practices are followed and realistic budgets are met Develop the annual budget for 2026-2027 season Oversee day-to-day financial operations Fundraising (in partnership with the Marketing Committee) Develop and manage the annual fundraising plan Expand and develop relationships with major donors, family foundations, and philanthropic foundations Lead a team of staff and board in grassroots fundraising and major-donor expansion Communications Communicate CJO's mission and vision clearly to performance audiences, funders, donors, and media outlets Actively engage and energize CJO's board members, partnering organizations, funders, donors, and staff Grow CJO's community of listeners by working with staff, Board of Directors, and the Marketing Committee to increase the visible footprint the organization Work collaboratively with partner organizations to increase the impact of CJO's mission Get creative around other ways to share CJO content through collaborations, partnerships, events, and other means Preferred Qualifications Experience in nonprofit executive/staff roles, preferably in arts Management experience with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget Experience in negotiating and working within a union environment Demonstrated ability to raise money; experience with major donors and/or foundations Experience building new revenue streams for any type of organization Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills Action-oriented, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed Compensation Annual salary $42,000 (pro rata) Seniority level Executive Employment type Full-time Job function Business Development and Sales #J-18808-Ljbffr The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra
